Western
hemlock ( Tsuga heterophylla )
Hemlocks
are noted for their droopy tops and branches and
short needles. The needles of the western
hemlock have distinctively
different sizes ranging generally under
1 inch long on the same twig. The color of their
needles are yellow-green on
top with two white bands on its underside, and mainly
run along
the sides of the twigs. The western hemlock
has egg-shaped cones approximately 1 inch long,
with smooth, thin scales.
They are found primarily in the coastal regions
of the Pacific Northwest.
